介紹火山的「一般事實」或「科學原理」時，我們用現在簡單式，就像介紹地球運作的規則一樣。

過去簡單式 vs. 過去進行式：說一段歷史故事
背景動作：was/were + V-ing（正在進行）
突發事件：V-ed（打斷背景動作）
突發事件：V-ed（打斷背景動作）
例句： People were having dinner when the volcano suddenly erupted.
描述「正在做某件事的時候，突然發生了另一件事」時，背景用過去進行式，插入的事件用過去簡單式。這是講述火山噴發故事時最常用的句型！

現在進行式：談論正在規劃的行程
Subject + am/is/are + V-ing ...
例句： We are traveling to Iceland this summer. I am packing warm clothes for the trip.
要說「最近正在計畫」或「即將要做」的事，英文常用現在進行式，例如規劃這趟冰島之旅時就很常用到，跟中文「正在～」的語感很像。
